Insect Mobile Mia is the fruition of a project seed sprung in a little miracle – the birth of our son's cousin! We machined and painted a baby mobile with insects, which hopped along Grandmother on the train to the newly born girl.

A conceptual sketch defines the species involved, as well as aspirations of form and colour. This early on in the process, we still do not know what name the young girl will bear.

A 3D model is created to calculate the correct scale and centerweight so that all insects are balanced in relation to each other and themselves.

From the defined curves of the 3D model, CNC instructions are created so that we can machine the elements with our WorkBee. The video above is the same one as in the beginning of the post.

The machined elements are glued together and painted by hand. Threads are inserted through the elements and everything is put together. We are satisfied with the end result, and most satisfied that the little cousin enjoys it as well!
